A 45-year-old man died after being shot by police during a raid by the Excise Department (Prohibition of Liquor) in Shahpur Nagar Panchayat of Bhojpur district late on Sunday evening, following which heavy tension spread in Shahpur town area. The deceased has been identified as Sushil Yadav (45 years), son of Jagdish Yadav.
The incident took place in ward number 3 of Shahpur Nagar Panchayat when the Excise Department team had arrived to conduct a raid based on alleged secret information about liquor. According to the villagers, when liquor was not found during the search, there was an altercation with the women of the house. During this, the women started making noise, due to which a large number of villagers gathered.
Seeing the growing crowd and anger of the villagers, a jawan of the Excise Department allegedly opened fire after finding himself surrounded. The bullet hit Sushil Yadav directly and he died on the spot. After this incident, there was a stampede and the angry crowd caught the jawan who fired the shot and started beating him, while the rest of the policemen left the said jawan and fled from the spot.
The local people, enraged by the incident, blocked the main road by placing the body of the deceased near Shahpur police station turn and raised slogans against the excise department. The protesting villagers questioned how the excise department team conducted the raid without informing the local police station? They remained adamant on the demand for compensation, government job for the family of the deceased and registration of FIR against the guilty policemen.
Given the seriousness of the matter, Jagdishpur's Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rajesh Kumar Sharma and Sub-Divisional Officer (SDM) Sanjeet Kumar immediately reached the spot. They talked to the family of the deceased and took full information about the incident and assured appropriate legal action. After their assurance, the blockade was removed from the road late at night and the body has been sent to Ara Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.
